This has truly been the summer of Cena. The WWE superstar turned Hollywood star has taken over our screens this summer. Starting with Universal’s F9, then WB’s The Suicide Squad. Followed shortly thereafter by his main event at WWE’s Summerslam versus Roman Reigns. Quite the line-up right? But why stop there? This weekend Hulu released their new original film, Vacation Friends.

In this raunchy comedy, we meet the very by-the-book couple of Marcus and Emily, played by Lil Rei Howery and Yvonne Orji. During their vacation to Mexico, they cross paths with quite the opposite couple of Ron and Kyla, played by John Cena and Meredith Hagner. After a wild vacation, they thought they would never run into them again. Only to have them show up at their wedding. Now the chaos from vacation has spilled over to their wedding.

In Vacation Friends, Cena plays the role of Ron. He is one half of the thrill-seeking couple that changes the lives of Marcus and Emily. Quite different from his other roles this year. So what was so attractive about this role? During a recent press conference with the cast of Vacation Friends, Cena told us what was so attractive about Ron.

“Honestly when I read the script from Clay it was like, this is kinda where I am in my life right now. I know the great thing about the comedic presentation of a movie called Vacation Friends.” Said Cena. “I love it because you know what you’re gonna get when you see the movie. The two words describe what you’re gonna see, so you have expectations. Any great comedy takes relatable situations and completely makes them hysterically absurd.”

He continued by comparing it to some of the other classic comedies that are so close to our hearts.  “That’s what this movie does. It puts us in a situation… like, I’ll use Super Bad, The Hangover, you could go on and on. You get it. You get what the Hangover is about. But it’s so far that that’s where we can laugh at it because these people go through these absurd situations. So you know what Vacation Friends is about.”

Hulu’s Vacation Friends is a really fun movie. What makes it even better in my opinion is that it’s accessible to everyone from their homes. So while a lot of things may be a serious matter, you can at least take some time to sit back and enjoy some good old-fashioned comedy.
