The Tax Collector brings back director David Ayer back to his roots in nitty-gritty crime dramas.
Earlier in his career, his films Street Kings and End of Watch showcased his cinema-style that is wonderfully rooted in colors, action, and violent realism. He later translated his style into more mainstream films with Sabotage and World War II film Fury.
According to some critics, he may have lost his way with the comic book film Suicide Squad and sci-fi Netflix film Bright. His career comes full circle as he returns to the crime action dramas he was known for.
The Tax Collector follows two “tax collectors” named David (Bobby Soto) and Creeper (Shia LeBeouf) for a crime lord Wizard. They collect Wizard’s cut of profits from the local gang’s illicit dealings. But when Wizard’s old rivals return to Los Angeles from Mexico, the business of tax collection is upended. David finds himself desperate to protect what matters more to him than anything else—his family.

The film also stars Lana Parrilla (Once Upon a Time, Boomtown), Chelsea Rendon (Bright), and George Lopez (River Runs Red, El Chicano).
I’m glad to see David Ayer doing a film like this. His approach towards street gang crime dramas is what he does best. The Tax Collector looks like it fits in the same vein of End of Watch. Not to mention, Shia LeBeouf is barely recognizable in this trailer. Definitely on the watch list.
The Tax Collector will be in theaters, On Demand and digital download on August 7.
