The Walking Dead Season Nine Recap: The Obliged

Rick Grimes has been following the written words his son left him. He’s formed a union between the communities and attempted to build a bridge, figuratively and literally, between his people and the “civil” remains of the Saviors. He has strived to not make Negan a martyr by keeping him locked up for life. Rick felt that peace was just around the corner.

Some disagreed and have lost patience with Rick’s dream.

Maggie and Daryl’s plan has gone into effect. Maggie has decided to head to Alexandria to “finish the job”. Daryl tells Rick he’ll help get to Alexandria faster on his bike when he really plans to block Rick from getting there. When the two get into and tussle and fall, they find themselves trapped inside a deep crater, where their debate continues as they attempt to find a way out of it.

Back at Alexandria, Michonne visits Negan in his cell due to his refusal to eat his food. Negan uses his time with her to plant in her head that she isn’t built for running a community or playing government. She is a warrior who needs to be roaming. His words, growing ever more personal regarding her history, drive Michonne to anger as she leaves the room.

Meanwhile, Saviors lead by Jeb have cornered Carol and the others back at the camp. Armed with a gun and aware of Oceanside’s actions toward them, Jeb has demanded Carol step aside and let them have Oceanside. What results is Carol delivering a shot to his knee and gunfire erupting, which Rick and Daryl can hear from their location and decide to try to climb out. Avoiding tumbling Walkers, Rick and Daryl help each other out, but as Daryl grabs his motorcycle towhead back to camp, Rick tells him he’s going to lead the oncoming herd away. With a request to be safe from Daryl, Rick hops on a roaming horse from camp and rides to lead away from the herd.

As Rick leads one herd to a turning the road, he shocked to see another herd heading directly at him. Spooked by what lies ahead, the horse rears up and Rick is thrown to the ground, landing on a cement block and a steel rod going through his side. The camera slowly pans away as Rick lays helpless on the ground with two herds of Walkers heading right for him.
