Previously on AMC’s The Walking Dead, the show aired commercials in a normal fashion. This all will change with the show’s upcoming season. Attempting to be more innovative, the network will feature six second advertisements right before the premiere of a new episode. The president of advertising sales for AMC networks, Scott Collins spoke about the new advertising method in an interview with Variety:
“Fans will appreciate the fact that it’s brief, and it’s highly valuable for the advertisers. Six seconds seems to be a new format that people are more interested in than in the past. It doesn’t work for everyone. It all depends on the advertising.”
The idea is the viewer will happily sit through the extremely short advertisement, due to the anticipation of a new episode of the show, even when viewing on a DVR.
With apps like AdBlock and probably most of all, piracy, advertisers had to figure out something to keep helping companies promote their products and services. Someday, we may see advertising totally incorporated into the shows themselves, big time product placement. Until then we can only hope that advertisers strive to make their commercials more clever and entertaining.
