Okay. Every project has a speed bump, right? With Aladdin, we have the Genie’s look, with Sonic the Hedgehog, we have Sonic the Hedgehog, and it’s possible that with The Witcher, we have the Nilfgaardian armor. But what am I talking about? Feast your eyes on the footage above from Redanian Intelligence, and you’ll have a better idea of what I’m talking about…or maybe you won’t. That’s actually part of the problem here, as nothing is presented in context.

In the video, we see a bunch of men playing around in some odd-looking armor. Rather than look like a standard armor set we’ve come to expect in the medieval-inspired fantasy shows, this looks more like a mix between said standard armor and a walnut shell.

The YouTube video here doesn’t feature much in the way of information other than the title “Nilfgaardian Armor #1,” and the vertical video shooting style hints at it potentially originating from some extra’s Snapchat story. The implication here is that these are the weapons and armor we can expect from The Witcher, Netflix’s adaptation of the novel series by Andrzej Sapkowski.

So, what do I think of this? First off, I have to say I haven’t read the novel source material, so I don’t know whether or not this look is closer to the source material than the video game. That being said, while I can respect the attempt to create armor that looks different from your run-of-the-mill fantasy, this is certainly at least a little concerning.

But, of course, as the biz has taught us time and again, on-set photos and videos tend to be incredibly unforgiving on costumes, so perhaps once the VFX and color correction has been done, these will look better? And then there is also the possibility that this is fake.
