Thor 5 In Development With Taika Waititi Back? – Not So Fast

In a recent interview filmmaker Gareth Edwards denies he's in talks to direct Thor 5.

Perhaps the biggest news that dropped at the weekend was that Thor 5 is in development with Taika Waititi back. However, not so fast, because Variety says this is very far from a done deal. An official Marvel companion book had details of Taika Waiti and what his plans would be for Thor 5. Many fans immediately felt like this was confirmation that Thor 5 is a go and Waititi is directing.

Hard to argue with an official book. However, Variety are doing just that because Waititi was only asked what he would do for Thor 5. The trade says that whilst the book does detail some plans from Waititi, there is currently no deal for the writer//director to make Thor 5. Does that mean, the movie won’t happen? Not necessarily, however many fans disliked Thor: Love and Thunder. It’ s therefore possible Marvel will try a new approach. Another big factor will likely be what interests star Chris Hemsworth to come back to the role again.

Here is what Variety had to say;

While there’s no “Thor 5” in development, Waititi revealed (via Screenrant) in Titan’s “‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ The Official Movie Special” book what he would do if given an opportunity to direct a new installment in the “Thor” film series.

I guess the question remains should bring Taika Waititi back for Thor 5? I think the general fan consensus is, not really, or if he’s doing it not to give him carte blanche. Hard for me to agree because I genuinely liked Love and Thunder. Okay, not as much as Ragnarok, I admit. However, I didn’t hate the movie as much as most fans seem to. Still, what Disney will be looking at is box office. The fact remains that Love and Thunder didn’t do as well financially or critically as Ragnarok.

I say get Waititi back, if his pitch sounds interesting. So, what did Waititi say he’d do with Thor 5, if he gets the chance?

transcript via ScreenRant.

“What is left to do to him? It’s got to be something that feels like it’s carrying on with the evolution of the character, but still in a very fun way and still giving him things to come up against that feel like they’re building on the obstacles that he has to overcome,” Waititi said. “I don’t think we can have a villain that’s weaker than Hela. I feel like we need to step up from there and add a villain that’s somehow more formidable.”

He added, “There’s a fun element to [Thor] and he has a casualness and a sort or swagger about him when he visits these worlds and encounters these aliens that I don’t think you’d get when it’s an earthling traveling through space exploring the universe.”

It sounds like Waititi would like the chance to pitch an idea for Thor 5. However, when exactly is he going to pull that off? You may remember Kathleen Kennedy is currently awaiting a finished draft of Waititi’s Star Wars script. Not to mention all the other projects the director and writer is working on. I can’t see this one happening any time soon folks.

So if you’ve seen the rumor that Thor 5 is in development with Taika Waititi back then it’s incorrect. Currently no Thor 5 movie is greenlit, or in active development. That may change, but it’s unlikely to be soon. Thoughts below as always.
