Thor: Love And Thunder Is NOT A Passing Of The Torch To Mighty Thor Says Waititi

Thor: Love And Thunder - Deleted Scenes, Emotional Comedy And Crazy Four Hour Cuts Waititi

Director Taika Waititi says Thor: Love and Thunder is NOT a passing of the torch to Mighty Thor. Now, Waititi doesn’t decide what comes next at Marvel, so he can only speak for his own movie. The point however, is that Love and Thunder is not set up that way. additionally Hemsworth who plays Thor, has always said he’s happy to play Thor until he’s no longer wanted by the fans or the Studio.

Speaking with Total Film Magazine recently and covered by their sister outlet Games Radar. Waititi talked about his point of view and for him, this is not a passing of the torch.

“We stick pretty closely to Jane’s storyline, and what happened to Jane… because that was such an influence on the film. We’re trying to take the best parts of that.” He continues: “And also, it’s really fun, the idea that Thor [has] got Stormbreaker, that big axe, and now his hammer’s back and it’s in the hands of someone else. It’s no longer his hammer. It’s the idea that someone’s taking his place. I think a lot of fans are gonna potentially assume, ‘Oh, OK, this is the passing on of the torch’… I’m not privy to any plans Marvel has for the future, but I don’t think that’s the case.”

It’s completely understandable why many fans would make this assumption. After all, all the OG Avengers are kinda getting replaced now. Tony Stark will eventually be replaced by Riri Williams (Ironheart), we have a new Captain America already in Sam Wilson and She-Hulk is making her debut soon also. Add in Yelena as the new Black Widow and Kate Bishop as the new Hawkeye and, well, you can see the pattern here.

Ultimately though, this was always more down to the actors moving on that Marvel getting rid. RDJ had enough and so Stark was killed. Evans also had enough and therefore Cap retired, and ScarJo was killed as she had had enough of Black Widow. However, Hemsworth still seems to really enjoy playing Thor. Waititi in particular gave the character a new lease of life. I for one am a huge fan, and think there is absolutely no reason to not have Hemsworth stay the course for a few more years to come.

Ultimately it’s not his decision. However Taika Waititi says Thor: Love and Thunder is NOT a passing of the torch to Mighty Thor. We’ll see what happens in the future? As always, leave any thoughts you have below, or over on our Discord server.
