According to Deadline, a Thunderbolts movie is in development and it finds its director. We kinda knew that either a Thunderbolts, or Dark Avengers movie/show was coming. That’s what the Val appearances in Black Widow and TFATWS were teasing after all. We also have a potential cast being built up. We have Yelena, Walker, Zemo, Abomination, and maybe even Ghost, or Taskmaster.
Still, the sad passing of William Hurt did make fans wonder if the show/movie would instead go in a Dark Avengers trajectory? However, nope, it is Thunderbolts. Additionally, The Wrap reports that Yelena (Florence Pugh) will star in the movie.
“According to an insider with knowledge of the project, The Wrap has learned that Florence Pugh’s Yelena Bulova might return to star.”
Here is what was reported by the trade in the first report.
Marvel Studios’ top-secret Thunderbolts movie looks to have gained momentum as Deadline has learned that Jake Schreier is set as director of the new Marvel tentpole. Black Widow scribe Eric Pearson is penning the script with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige producing.
Not much is known about the plot of film other than it revolves around a group of villains who are sent on missions commissioned by the government. Another element that remains vague is which characters will be part of this team since the film is technically still is in development, though sources say Marvel has been in touch with certain individuals who already are part of the MCU to make sure to keep an opening in their schedules for next summer when it shoots.

Deadline also said this of how Schrieier got the gig.
“According to insiders, Schreier’s presentation in recent weeks blew away execs and ultimately landed him the job.”
Schrieier recently wrapped production on the A24 and Netflix series Beef and has directed episodes of FX’s Dave. However there is no doubt Thunderbolts will the biggest project Schrieier has ever been involved with. Marvel does like to find the upcoming talent. Therefore, picking relative unknowns is expected, rather than curious these days.
