Tobey Maguire Spider-Man 3 News Coming Soon? | Free Talk Friday

The latest Spidey Barside Buzz says that Spider-Man 4 will film this Fall and Justin Lin is now one of the contenders to direct the movie.

Well this rumor has been back and forth over the last few months. Is Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 3? Not that Spider-Man 3, the new one from Marvel Studios. So far we have heard yes, and we’ve heard no. One source who I have grown to trust is scooper Charles Murphy of Murphy’s Multiverse. Murphy has been saying that the Maguire deal was still not signed, but talks were ongoing. That’s my theory about where we have been recently, but something might have changed?

Welcome to Free Talk Friday, this week I am going into a bit more detail on the whole Spider-Verse situation. Despite what Tom Holland might say, there are to many rumors from insiders I trust with good records for there to be smoke without fire here. I just don’t buy it and won’t until I see the movie and there is no Maguire…or Garfield. See I’m most confident about Garfield being involved, but until someone has signed on, they are not in a movie. So I figured Maguire would happen, but we just don’t know until a deal is in place.

Hints and Teases

Yesterday, Murphy who has always been consistent on saying the Maguire deal was not completed, posted this on Twitter.

Then, we had Daniel Richtman, respond by posting this.

Finally, in a now deleted post, ComicBook.com‘s Brandon Davis then said he expected a trade to announce the deal very soon. Ultimately though, this was not something Davis was saying he had actually heard. Instead, like me, he saw the cryptic posts from the scoopers above, and assumed this was going to be the case.

So I’ll stick my neck out here. I reckon by the middle of next week one of the trades is going to run a scoop that Tobey Maguire has been cast in Spider-Man 3. If not that, then some sort of news or maybe even official announcement is going to happen instead. I’m assuming Murphy has heard the deal is now signed and Maguire will return and presumably Richtman has heard something similar on the jungle drums.

Not  only do I think Maguire is in, (I always figured it was just a matter of time), but I also think Garfield is in Atlanta for filming already. Tom Holland has been following the advice of his Marvel interrogation resistance trainers. Which, pretty much these days is ‘deny, deny, deny, apologies for lying.’ I’ve said before Holland has been coached, due to having the worst poker face in history. I think his new tactic is simply to lie and deny things and then say, ‘sorry guys, I had to’ after the fact. Which, by the way, is fine, Holland won’t be the first nor last Marvel actor to lie in interviews. Though Kevin Feige never lies, he just nods his head and refuses to answer any questions he can’t talk around.

These are the lengths studios have to go to these days to stop spoilers. This is the film business now, we are told what they want us to hear, when they want us to hear it. However as any readers of LRM know, that is not where the best scoops tend to come from anyway.

Thoughts?

Sadly, I don’t care that much, and I say that as someone who rates Spider-Man as my second favorite superhero. First is Batman, then Spidey, and then almost all Marvel from there on out. I also rate Spider-Man: Far From Home as my favorite Spider-Man movie. However, I did not particularly like the previous Spider-Man movies. Even the critically acclaimed Spider-Man 2 never quite clicked for me. I never liked the Raimi Spider-Man having no web shooters and no smack talk. I also despised the version of Goblin we saw in the first Spider-Man movie, looked like a Power Rangers villain to me.

So whilst some fans are so excited to see Garfield, Maguire, Dafoe, Molina, Foxx, and maybe more all back, I’m not. I simply don’t need any more from those previous versions, by and large they were movies I’d never watch again. However, I have gone thought all this before and I end up saying the same thing, trust Marvel. If this was Sony’s idea, I’d be crying, but it’s not. The Multiverse is clearly a part of Marvel’s plans and it may be Marvel who asked Sony about incorporating their old movies. We have already had a cross-over to the Fox X-Men Universe in WandaVision. Though, that is a slightly different situation seen as Disney now own all those old X-Men movies themselves.

The Final Word

Maybe, this all works well for both Sony and Marvel? What if, by allowing their movies to connect to the MCU, even through a Multiverse, Marvel can keep hold of Tom Holland as Spider-Man. Is it possible Sony could develop their own Spider-Man in their own corner of the Multiverse? Is it possible that either Garfield (more likely) or Maguire could be Sony’s Spider-Man in this new reality? Or could Sony actually go down the Miles Morales route instead?

These are all good questions I don’t have the answer to. There is more to all this we are not seeing. I just don’t yet have that final piece of the puzzle I need to put it all together. Ultimately I’m so curious at this point, that I will actually watch Morbius. Depending on how that shakes out, I might even watch Venom: Let there be Carnage, though I am making no promises on that one. Does that mean Sony have won, have I fallen into the exact place the studio wanted MCU fans to be? After all, a year or two ago I said I would never watch another Sony led Marvel movie. I also said I felt Sony wanted fans to think their movies are the MCU just like Marvel’s.

Yet, here we are, one ticket to Morbius please. Oh, and what was that about Tobey Maguire and Spider-Man 3?
