Todd Phillips Addresses Outrage Culture And Joker Violence Criticism

All the rage today is, well, outrage. It seems the world has shifted over the last several years, and being offended by something, is now considered to be a virtue by many. The court of public opinion has more power than ever these days and those in the spotlight are being extra careful.

The most recent offender is Todd Phillips’ Joker. The film was criticized earlier this week for its supposed violence and the possibility it could inspire some to carry out real-life acts. Phillips addressed this criticism while speaking with The Wrap, and you can check out what he had to say below.

“I think it’s because outrage is a commodity, I think it’s something that has been a commodity for a while. What’s outstanding to me in this discourse in this movie is how easily the far left can sound like the far right when it suits their agenda. It’s been really eye opening for me.”

Personally, I don’t think you can allow the idea of what someone MIGHT do to affect your film, or any sort of art for that matter. I believe that if a person is motivated to do evil, they’re going to do it, whether it’s your film, a book, or a song that sets them off.

Outrage culture, cancel culture are detriments to creativity and art in our society, and censoring that is a slippery slope to much more dangerous territory.
