Spoiler alert? Tony Stark is dead. The poor fellow went out in the final fight against Thanos at the destroyed Avengers headquarters. But the man didn’t go out like a chump. In a moment that has since gone down in history, he uttered the words “I am Iron Man” before snapping his fingers and turning Thanos into dust.

But the action didn’t come without its consequences. The Infinity Stones took their toll on Stark’s body and ultimately destroyed it, taking with them the life of our beloved Iron Man. As it turns out, he almost had a more horrific death.

Speaking with Insider, VFX supervisor Matt Aitken discussed one particular approach they gave for Tony Stark’s dying moments.

“We gave the filmmakers a full range [of looks] to choose from and one of those was where the energy from the stones had acted right up into his face and popped one of his eyeballs out and it was hanging out on his cheek. They didn’t go for that one.”

Good god! Who put Peter Jackson in charge of Stark’s death scene, am I right? All jokes aside, it makes sense. Nowadays, filmmakers are given more control than ever before of virtually every single element out there, so why not give them a whole buffet of dying Starks to choose from?
