Beyond Fest returns to the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood tonight, bringing with it its usual assemblage of awesome genre films from around the world. What other film festivals only show in their midnight sections, horror, sci-fi, action and other out-there movies, Beyond Fest’s lineup is entirely made up of. There are many favorites from the festival circuit showing, in addition to a few select world premieres. Here are LRM Online‘s most anticipated movies of the fest:
1. Jojo Rabbit– Winner of the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, director Taika Waititi’s Nazi satire rides a huge wave of awards season buzz into L.A. If it’s anything like his other recent efforts, like Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Thor: Ragnarok, it will be quite the crowdpleaser.
2. Parasite – Director Bong Joon-Ho (The Host, Okja) takes on classism in his native Korea in this Palme d’Or winning effort. Raves have been pouring in for it since its Cannes Film Festival debut in May.
3. Dolemite is My Name – Eddie Murphy looks to regain some of his comedic mojo by portraying Dolemite creator and star Rudy Ray Moore. Scripted by experienced biopic writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (Ed Wood, Man on the Moon), it looks to be Murphy’s best role in years.
4. VFW – Horror director Joe Begos (Almost Human, The Mind’s Eye) gives us a siege tale of over the hill military vets taking on mutant punks who invade their local VFW post. Elder badasses Stephen Lang, William Sadler and Fred Williamson star.
5. In Search of Darkness: The Definitive 80s Horror Documentary – Running a whopping 4 hours in length, this documentary features interviews with many of the stars and filmmakers behind the best and most memorable horror movies of the 1980s. What more could you want?
