Trade Report On James Gunn’s Superman Movie Seemingly Debunked – Again!

a new trade report on James Gunn's Superman movie and it has already been seemingly debunked by the man himself, again.

There’s a new trade report on James Gunn’s Superman movie. However the information has already been seemingly debunked by the man himself, again. This is beginning to be a pattern. Clearly there are less people in the know over at DC than there used to be and information is sketchy at best. Here is what Variety had to say.

Insiders told Variety that Gunn’s script will focus on Superman’s life as a cub reporter in the fictional city of Metropolis. Audiences will encounter him meeting key characters, like colleague Lois Lane. Because Gunn’s Superman is younger, there was never a chance of Cavill playing the role.

However Gunn later replied to a comment on Twitter, not related to this article. Yet, I kinda feel given the words he uses here, that he was referring to this one. Here is what he said followed by the Tweet itself.

“He’s not meeting the major characters for the first time, either. He’s merely younger.”

That seems like a direct debunking of what Variety claimed to me. What do you think?

As said above, very recently has seen a tough time for trades. Normally when a trade publishes a report we don’t classify it as a rumor the same way we would an outlet like LRM claiming to have heard details. However, what is abundantly clear this last week is that the trades are not infallible. The sheer amount of details published that have been debunked in the last few weeks is staggering and unusual to say the least. Does that mean we should start assigning a tier type system to trades? Nope, chances are this will all settle down and give the dramatic changes afoot at WB, it’s kinda no wonder that people who were previously good sources have suddenly less access to information.

That being said, it appears on this occasion Variety hasn’t quite got all the facts. Ergo, I think we may need to wait until Gunn has shown his current story to more parties before we start to hear genuine details. I’ll be very interested to see what a Gunn script would look like in another directors hands. For now Gunn hints that is a possibility. However I would also not rule out Gunn helming the movie himself. Going forward I’d take any non-official DCU information with a hefty dose of salt prior to whatever announcement Gunn and Saffran have planned for next year.

Maybe the good thing to note is that if a trade reports some DCU news and Gunn stays silent, it’s probably correct.

What do you think of this trade report on James Gunn’s Superman movie seemingly debunked by the man himself, again? Thoughts below as always.
