If you’re still itching for a new superhero series into today’s oversaturated world of superhero shows, you’re in luck. Not only has Netflix put up what is very clearly a whole lot of cash for the Dark Horse Comics series The Umbrella Academy, but it also holds a good deal of odd, fun quirks that may very well make things a little more interesting for familiar audiences.
The overall tone of this is pretty fun and relatively more irreverent than a lot of team-up superhero films (without going full Deadpool on us, at least), but will it be enough to capture interest for fans of the genre who grow weary of seeing the same kind of stories hit again and again. While they’re quite different in execution, I can see a lot of similarities with shows like The Gifted and Marvel’s Runaways.
Below is the official synopsis for Umbrella Academy:
“On the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by a billionaire who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world. Now, the six surviving members reunite upon the news of their father’s passing and must work together to solve a mystery surrounding his death. But the estranged family begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse. “
