If you were an 80s/90s kid then you may remember the 1990 film The Witches from Roald Dahl’s dark children’s graphic novel from 1983. I remember it being on HBO and my sister and I would watch it all the time. Looking back at it now, Anjelica Huston was scary as hell as the lead witch. Actually all the witches were. They were ripping off their wigs and faces while turning children into mice. Yeah, wild. Not sure how I didn’t have nightmares for years after. I’d check it out if you haven’t.
With it being the spooky season, what better time to release The Witches remake? The screenplay is reimagined by Robert Zemeckis, Kenya Barris, and Guillermo Del Toro. There is an awesome cast including Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci, Chris Rock, and Jahzir Bruno. The film will be available exclusively on HBO Max.
The WB provides a synopsis for the film which is below:
“Reimagining Dahl’s beloved story for a modern audience, Zemeckis’s visually innovative film tells the darkly humorous and heartwarming tale of a young orphaned boy (Bruno) who, in late 1967, goes to live with his loving Grandma (Spencer) in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis. As the boy and his grandmother encounter some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches, she wisely whisks our young hero away to an opulent seaside resort. Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the world’s Grand High Witch (Hathaway) has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe—undercover—to carry out her nefarious plans.”

I am definitely in for this. Maybe it’s a mix of 90s nostalgia, a great cast, and the Halloween season. However, I’ll check it out regardless. Do you remember the 1990s The Witches?
