Trailer: Klaus Impresses With Its 2D Animation (UPDATED)

UPDATE: I inaccurately stated in this piece that this was a CG-animated film that resembled 3D, but have since been corrected by the studio reps. As it turns out, this is actually a legit 2D-animated film with a new lighting technique the director helped develop. So, in many ways, this is even more exciting than what I was led to believe down below!

ORIGINAL STORY:

I’ve found myself a bit nostalgic as of late. As great as CG animation has been over the past 25 years or so, I’ve found myself longing for animation that resembles the films of my youth. Stuff from Disney and Don Bluth. The 2D stuff. And as it turns out, we’ve gotten to the point where we can essentially replicate that style in CG, as shown in the film Klaus.

Klaus looks to be one of Netflix’s big Christmas movies of the year, and while the movie itself looks charming enough without the animation, the animation certainly adds an extra layer of intrigue. Sure, we’ve has films like The Peanuts Movie add in a 2Dish element, but if you’re watching this while half-awake as I did this morning, you may find yourself briefly thinking that Netflix was footing the bill for a new 2D animated film that wasn’t anime.

Below is the official synopsis for Klaus:

When Jesper (Jason Schwartzman) distinguishes himself as the postal academy’s worst student, he is stationed on a frozen island above the Arctic Circle, where the feuding locals hardly exchange words let alone letters. Jesper is about to give up when he finds an ally in local teacher Alva (Rashida Jones), and discovers Klaus (Oscar® winner J.K. Simmons), a mysterious carpenter who lives alone in a cabin full of handmade toys. These unlikely friendships return laughter to Smeerensburg, forging a new legacy of generous neighbors, magical lore and stockings hung by the chimney with care. An animated holiday comedy directed by Despicable Me co-creator Sergio Pablos, KLAUS co-stars Joan Cusack, Will Sasso and Norm Macdonald.
