Telemarketing is a profession that certainly has the potential to suck the soul out of an employee. While my time in the telemarketing world was limited, it was easy to see how a lifetime of cold-calling could lead to mammoth depression. But apparently, I was doing it wrong, because the new flick Sorry to Bother You makes it look like a fulfilling badass dollar-printing machine.
Lakeith Stanfield (Get Out) leads a world-class cast that consists of Tessa Thompson, Terry Crews, David Cross, Danny Glover, and Armie Hammer in this wacky, off-the-wall take on a cold-dead industry.
Below is the official synopsis for Sorry to Bother You:
“In an alternate present-day version of Oakland, telemarketer Cassius Green discovers a magical key to professional success, propelling him into a macabre universe.”
The film is written and directed by rapper Boots Riley, and looks to be a unique and entertaining vision of an alternate reality. Between the visually-interest approach to the phone conversations to the stellar cast, Sorry to Bother You is a film that’s caught my attention.
The only real thing I’d peg against the film is that it seems a bit paint-by-numbers in structure. Man is slacker, man finds career he loves and is good at, man loses everything in the process of excelling at his career, man either pulls it back or goes all-in by the time the credits roll. Though if this trailer has taught me something, it’s that I may very well be in for a unique twist on those very tropes.
