In April 2008, author David Sheff published his memoir Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction. The book details how Sheff and his family dealt with his son Nic’s addiction to methamphetamines. Most of the novel deals with Nic’s addiction battle and his father’s struggle to love a son that is a danger to the rest of the family. The memoir became a critical and commercial success, reaching #1 on The New York Times Best Seller List and was named the #1 Best Nonfiction Book of 2008 on Entertainment Weekly. It earned the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Award for Nonfiction in 2008, Amazon selected it as one of the “Best Books Of 2008” and Starbucks picked it as one of the few books it sells in its coffee shops.
Early Wednesday morning, Amazon Studios released the trailer for the film adaptation of the book, starring Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamemt as David and Nic Sheff, respectively.
Judging by the trailer alone, the film looks to be an emotional experience with deep performances by past Academy Award nominees Carell and Chalamet as the Scheff father and son. A definite tear-jerker, especially for parents. Having been so accustomed to seeing Carell play characters like Brick Tamland, Andy Stitzer and Michael Scott, it can still be surprising how easily he embodies dark, dramatic and emotionally driven characters in films like Foxcatcher and Last Flag Flying. As for Chalamet’s ability to delve deep into a character’s emotional state, his performance in Call Me By Your Name speaks for itself.
The film is directed by Felix Van Groeningen and produced by Brad Pitt, who also produced and co-starred with Carell in the Academy Award winner for Best Adapted Screenplay, The Big Short. The rest of the cast includes Maura Tierney (ER, The Affair), Timothy Hutton (Ordinary People, Beautiful Girls), LisaGay Hamilton (The Practice, Jackie Brown) and Academy Award nominee Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone, Bridge Of Spies).
Beautiful Boy hits theaters on October 12th.
