Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion | Leo Chu & Eric S. Garcia On Bringing Mexican Traditions Of Lucha Libre To Disney+ [Exclusive]

Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion

This week Disney+ launched their new superhero series, Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion on Disney+. In this series, we are going to follow the journey of Violet Rodriguez, your typical Mexican-American teenager that is chosen by a magical luchador mask that transforms her into a superhero. Part of what makes this series special is that it features an all-Latinx cast and two fun Latinx superheroes.

Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion offers us a look inside the traditions of Mexican lucha libre. In the episodes, we learn about some of the rules and codes that wrestlers would follow. For example, the difference between a technico and a rudo. These lessons are vital for Violet to become a great superhero. They are taught to her by the superhero, also in a luchador mask, Black Scorpion that happens to be her uncle. He has his hands full with Violet as he has to deal with all of her teenage impulses that could put them in danger. For example, wanting to trend on social media, or wanting people to know her identity. Overall it’s a fun show that the whole family can enjoy.

You may know their names as they were also the executive producers for Afro Samurai and its sequel Afro Samurai: Resurrection. During our conversation, we talked about the aesthetics of the show, as it is very bright and includes a huge pop culture vibe in it’s presentation. They share with us how important it was that the show was accessible to everyone. As well as how the traditions of lucha libre are going to be integrated into this series. It was a very fun conversation that you can check out down below!

Here is the synopsis for Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion

Violet Rodriguez (Scarlett Estevez), an everyday Mexican American teen, is chosen by a magical luchador mask which transforms her into Ultra Violet, a superhero fighting crime alongside her luchador uncle, Cruz (J.R. Villarreal), also known as Black Scorpion. Although Cruz takes Violet under his wing to teach her the responsibilities of her special powers, she doesn’t always see eye-to-eye with him when it comes to his methods for capturing crooks.

In the meantime, she must keep her superhero identity secret from her parents and her older brother Santiago (“Tiago”). As well as her friends and schoolmates. However, she does lean on one close confidante: her best friend Maya Miller-Martinez. She provides advice and assists with documenting Ultra Violet’s adventures on social media.
