Upgrade Director To Helm Invisible Man Film, Blumhouse To Produce

A couple short years ago, Universal was touting the huge potential for their Dark Universe, a shared universe that would consist of the Universal monsters they made famous so many decades ago. The monsters in question included the likes of the Mummy, Frankenstein’s monster, the Invisible Man, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and more. They even went so far as to lock down talent like Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, Johnny Depp, and Javier Bardem for the ambitious project.

Sadly, it was dead on arrival. The Mummy was panned by critics, and audiences really didn’t seem to take to it any more than they did. And thus, the Dark Universe was ended before it even had a chance to gain momentum. Now, it looks like first steps have been taken to rekindle interest in these monsters, and it sounds like they’re pushing to make these films on a more individualized basis, as indicated by sources to Variety.

On board to direct The Invisible Man is director Leigh Whannell, who turned heads with his action-packed genre flick Upgrade.

“Throughout cinematic history, Universal’s classic monsters have been reinvented through the prism of each new filmmaker who brought these characters to life,” said Peter Cramer, Universal’s president of production. “We are excited to take a more individualized approach for their return to screen, shepherded by creators who have stories they are passionate to tell with them.”

In addition to Whannell, there is another exciting person involved: Jason Blum. That’s right, Blumhouse Productions, a studio that’s become synonymous with horror in years past, will be helping to bring this to life. Blum had expressed interest in resurrecting the Dark Universe in the past, and it looks like working to bring individual directors’ visions to life with these characters is how he plans on doing that.

Personally, I can’t think of a better way for them to do this. Give them a $10 million budget and let them run loose! But what do you think? Are you still hoping for a living, breathing, billion-dollar Dark Universe? Let me know your thoughts down below!
