WWE star John Cena is on a great run with both action films and comedies in recent years. Now he teams with funnyman Lil Rel Howery on a buddy comedy Vacation Friends that’ll pit the two for some funny hijinks.
The comedy also stars Yvonne Orji (Insecure, Night School), Meredith Hagner (Search Party, Palm Springs), Robert Wisdom (The Alienist, Ballers), Andrew Bachelor (The Babysitter, Holidate), and Lynn Whitfield (Greenleaf, Madea’s Family Reunion). Clary Tarver (Silicon Valley) directed the movie from a script written by Tom Mullen, Tim Mullen, Tarver with Jonathan Goldstein, and John Francis Daley.
Here’s the official synopsis for Vacation Friends:
In this raw and raunchy comedy, straight-laced Marcus and Emily (Howery, Orji) are befriended by wild, thrill-seeking partiers Ron and Kyla (Cena, Hagner) at a resort in Mexico. Living in the moment, the usually level-headed couple lets loose to enjoy a week of uninhibited fun and debauchery with their new “vacation friends.” Months after their walk on the wild side, Marcus and Emily are horrified when Ron and Kyla show up uninvited at their wedding, creating chaos, and proving that what happens on vacation, doesn’t necessarily stay on vacation.

John Cena has cemented himself as an action star recently with F9: The Fast Saga, Bumblebee, and the upcoming The Suicide Squad as Peacemaker. Of course, he balanced his movie career with plenty of comedies with Playing with Fire, Blockers, Daddy’s Home 2, and Trainwreck.
Although he is paired with Lil Rel Howery, Vacation Friends is going straight to the streaming platforms by skipping the theatrical release altogether. It’s possible that Walt Disney Pictures set many of the 20th Century Studios films for streaming after the acquisition of the studio. That’s too bad since the theatrical audiences need more comedies in that venue during this pandemic.
Vacation Friends premieres worldwide on Hulu in the United States and on Star on Disney+ internationally on August 27.
