The beginning of April is a difficult time to be a movie-lover. Blogs all over post April Fool’s stories to the point it’s hard to tell whether that story about Deadpool’s mouth getting sewn shut in the sequel is really the way things will turn out (okay, well maybe not that one). In an industry that’s ripe with false rumors, it’s already a bit difficult to get attached to pieces of news, but what about the one revolving around Woody Harrelson in Venom?
Around April 1, it was rumored that Harrelson — a confirmed actor for the film — would be playing Cletus Kasady. It’s not the most recognizable name to non-Venom fans, but comic readers will recognize it as the name of Carnage. In the story, Kasady is a deranged serial killer who ends up bonding with the alien symbiote. The creature that he becomes is quite a step up in crazy from Venom himself.

One fan asked Carnage co-creator David Michelinie what he thought of this. While Michelinie confirmed that he has no inside information on the project, he gave his two cents on the idea of Harrelson playing the villain.
“Harrelson’s a good actor, and has a decent range. He’s played nutso characters in the past, but I guess we’ll have to wait until October to see just how far he can ramp it up. Fingers crossed.”
Harrelson indeed has played pretty deranged characters in the past. Most recently, he played the very believable villain War for the Planet of the Apes. While that character isn’t quite as deranged as Kasady, it certainly drives the point home that he can play a real threat, even in the face of Tom Hardy.
Personally, having him play Kasady would be an inspired choice, and I’m almost at the point where I can’t imagine him in any other role in the flick. I’d love to see him go head-to-head with Hardy, but what about you? Let us know your thoughts down below!
