Not long ago, there was a wonderful exchange on Twitter. A fan suggested to director James Gunn that he should give Mark Hamill a role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gunn said, “Let’s do it.” Hamill then told Gunn if he was serious, to send him a message. We haven’t heard much about the exchange since and nothing official has come down from the higher-ups. Hamill recently spoke to Collider, and talked about the exchange on Twitter.
“Well this happened organically one Sunday night you know, as happens you know, I’m reading a book or watching a movie, and someone said to James Gunn, ‘Hey why don’t you put Hamill himself [in Guardians 3], that’s how I’m known now, I’m not Mark Hamill, I’m @Hamillhimself, and I went on Twitter, @markhamill was already taken, I said ‘Can they do that?’ Well they can, but any case, you know, he said well, put mark in Guardians of the Galaxy, and James Gunn says he lives around the corner, maybe well have coffee and talk it over, so I immediately said I would be more than happy to do so, both as a good neighbor and an unemployed actor, but I was just having fun, I mean, I follow him on Twitter, he’s a deeply gifted guys and I love those movies, but ya know, who knows.
While it’s a bummer we didn’t get any confirmation on Hamill’s potential role, that doesn’t mean something isn’t in the works, as Marvel is notoriously secretive with the plans for their shared superhero universe. This would be a perfect match in my opinion, as well as a whole lot of fun for fans. It’s possible we may not know for a while as Guardians 3 isn’t due out for over a year.
