Venom Director Ruben Fleischer Has No Desire To Do An Unrated Cut (Exclusive)

Us geeks really do love our “mature” content, don’t we? It’s almost as if it is a validation that the art that we consume wasn’t intended for a younger audience — despite the fact that we often fell into our fandoms at a young age. It’s with this in mind that we’ve all had our eyes on the Venom film.

In the eyes of some fans, there was no way to do a true-to-form version of the character without it being in an R-rated film. And yet, what we got in the recent film was a PG-13 film that well enough with audiences to break $850 million at the box office.

Back when the film was about to come out, we asked helmer Ruben Fleischer if he would be up to do an unrated version of the film, and he gave an answer to the affirmative at the time. However, following its success, I couldn’t help but wonder if he still felt that way, so I asked him. Here’s what he said:

I’m proud of the movie we’ve put out, and I think that the additional material on the DVD adds a little bit of color to the film. I don’t feel the need at this point to release an unrated version, I feel like fans seem to really like the movie that we put out.

It’s a response that makes perfect sense. With this movie, they’ve pretty much proved they can make the character work — they made lots of money and were able to show off a couple of scenes where the baddies got their heads ripped off. I mean, that’s all we need, right?

Are you disappointed that it looks like we won’t be getting an unrated version of the film? Let us know your thoughts down below!
