Venom director Ruben Fleischer says that the upcoming film starring Tom Hardy in the titular role could be the jumping off point for future films to create a franchise. While speaking with ComicBook.com at San Diego Comic-Con, Fleischer said those potential sequels will depend on how well Venom is received when it’s released later this year.

“We’ve definitely laid some groundwork for different directions that the franchise could go but obviously it all hinges on people’s excitement about this film. I hope people will stay and see what seeds have been planted.”

The last part of that quote hints at a post-credits scene being very important to the future of this potential franchise.

One of the first questions that comes to the mind of many fans is, would this future Venom universe ever include Spider-Man? With Sony and Marvel appearing to be a good terms, and willing to scratch each other’s backs, it is definitely possible, however, the likelihood is not something easily determinable at this time. Personally, I think that Spider-Man and Venom will eventually cross paths, doing so would be beneficial for both studios.

Upon first hearing of Tom Hardy’s casting as the character, I found it an unusual choice for the actor, but the trailer has done much to qualm those concerns.

Venom hits theaters October 5.
