Venom: Ruben Fleischer Confirms The Plan Is For An Eventual Tom Holland/Tom Hardy Face-Off

Venom: Let There Be Carnage Runtime Is Only 90-Minutes

When it was first announced that there would be a standalone Venom film, there were plenty of concerns. Of course, with the origin of the character so tied to Spider-Man, they had that to deal with that, but there was an overall concern about Spider-Man as a character. Was this move just an attempt for them to eventually borrow Spider-Man from the MCU?

Speaking with FANDOM, Venom director Ruben Fleischer pretty much confirmed what we already knew — that Sony had plans to pit Spidey against Venom from the start.

“That’s where it’s all going to lead, and that’s the exciting thing, because we changed the origin of Venom … in the comics, he evolved from Spider-Man but because of the Marvel-Sony thing we weren’t able to that. And so the thing I think it’s building towards, and will be exciting to see, is when they actually do confront each other.”

Needless to say, I hear fans cursing the heavens upon reading this quote. Many of our contributors here at LRM Online have always disliked the idea of Sony creating their own pocket universe, and ultimately feared it would result in them eventually trying to pull Spidey from the MCU — a concern that became all too real very recently.

While I was one of the few who sided with Sony in that custody case, I can understand fans’ annoyance, as they care more about getting a good movie than the business behind the scenes (which I think fell squarely in Sony’s favor when looked at objectively).

So what do you think of all this? Does it make you that much more cynical? Let us know your thoughts down below!
