The Lord of the Rings TV show coming from Amazon can be massively successful. However, there are still some worried Tolkien fans out there. The material being adapted for this show is not written out like a traditional book, more like the records of old. This lack of detail will allow the showrunners to put their onw stamp on Tolkien’s world in a way which has not been done before. With great power, as we know also comes great responsibility.
Many fans have been worried that Amazon are trying to turn The Lord of the Rings into their version of Game of Thrones. I love The Lord of the Rings, and I love Game of Thrones, but the same they are not. This worry is likely compounded by the period in question being a distinctly darker period of middle-Earth. Then we had those casting calls for actors who are comfortable with nudity and intimate scenes. The fan reaction, was admittedly over the top. We cannot simply make assumptions based on such little information, however there is a chance those worries were founded after all?

Speaking with NME, Viggo Mortensen who starred as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings movies has a warning for the TV bosses. However Mortensen also does not think there is anything to worry about.
“[Am I worried that] they would try to be like Game Of Thrones and have a certain level of arbitrary violence and stuff like that? I dunno. I know it’s J.A. Bayona, who is a Spanish director who’s very talented. They are doing it in New Zealand, so I would imagine they would have the benefit of Peter Jackson’s advice and maybe some of the crew members. I would think that they have every opportunity to do it right. They have a good example to follow.”
In other words, I don’t think they would be crazy enough to do that, and I hope they are taking advice. I would simply echo Mortensen’s take. I love both fantasy franchises, but Tolkien is not George R.R. Martin and vice versa. Take advice from the people who understand Tolkien’s mythology, and don’t try to stray too far from the source.
I guess we will find out eventually whether these warnings were heeded? Leave your thoughts on The Lord of the Rings TV show below.
