Villains For Warner Bros. New Gods Film Revealed

In the early 1970 legendary comic book creator Jack Kirby had a falling out with Marvel Comics which compelled him to move to DC Comics and create The Fourth World giving birth to The New Gods. They were featured in three different titles New Gods, Forever People and Mister Miracle. They are called New Gods as they came into existence after the world of the old gods was destroyed during Ragnarok. The world of these beings was split into two separate planets New Genesis and Apokolips. Yes this corner of the DC Universe is a bit complicated but very significant as it saw the creation of one if it’s biggest threats, Darkseid.

Although we have seen a lot of these characters in animated form, most of them have never seen the big screen, except for Steppenwolf in Justice League alongside the parademons from Apokolips. But as we know a film centering around the New Gods, is being developed from a script from Kario Salem with Ava DuVernay set to direct.

Thanks to Geeks Worldwide we now have a better idea of what the story will focus on. With multiple sources confirming that Mr. Miracle and Big Barda will be featured as the protagonist, it has also been revealed that Granny Goodness and the Female Furies will serve as the villains for the New Gods film.

Granny Goodness and the Furies have been featured before in animated form. She first appeared in DC Comics’ Mister Miracle #2 in June of 1971, written of course by Jack Kirby. Granny Goodness resides in Apokolips and is in charge of training and disciplining soldiers for the forces of Darkseid and she is also the leader of the Female Furies which were originally made up of Big Barda, Bernadeth, Lashina, Mad Harriet and Stompa.

One of her most noticeable students was Scott Free aka Mr. Miracle. In order to establish a peace treaty, Darkseid and High Father, the ruler of New Genesis, exchanged sons. Orion was given to High Father to live a life of enlightenment on New Genesis. While Scott Free, who was nameless at the time, had to endure Darkseid’s constant attempts to crush and corrupt his will at one of Granny Goodness’ orphanages. But all the training he received only motivated him further to attempt to escape. Until finally he did, fleeing to earth and then adopting the name Scott Free. It is there where he met an escape artist, Thaddeus Brown, who after his death also adopted his stage name Mister Miracle.

Big Barda was also raised on Apokolips becoming one of the world’s greatest warriors and served as the leader of the Female Furies. But she fell in love with the then nameless Scott Free. This lead to her also fleeing Apokolips to Earth so she could be reunited with Scott, where they eventually got married and both served as members of the Justice League.

I am personally a big fan of Mister Miracle and Big Barda. It’s one of my favorite classic DC stories. It will be interesting to see if the film will center around the couple after they have fled Apokolips to Earth or if it will focus on when they were growing up. Also will this film finally get us a look at Darkseid? I hope this film progresses and we get to see a final product. Currently there has not been anyone cast for the film and it has not been given a release date.
