Vincent D’Onofrio Talks Kingpin and New ‘Daredevil’ Series

Transient

Vincent D’Onofrio has carved out quite a lengthy, successful career for himself. With credits going back over 30 years, which include roles in Full Metal JacketMen In BlackJFK, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and much more, one would understand if he’d be hesitant to take on a new show. With 10 seasons of Criminal Intent under his belt, some would think it strange that he’s going right back into another television series. But the 6’4 actor sounds downright giddy about his next project: Daredevil, a Marvel production for Netflix.

Filming has been great. I can’t really talk about specifics. Really,” he tells Men’s Journal in a new interview. “But I can tell you it’s all working. It’s all gritty. Everything is really impressive. They seem to know what they’re doing over at Marvel. I think ever since Downey and [Jon] Favreau did Iron Man and proved that comic book movies could be really cool they’ve just embraced that and taken it to the next level. They keep knocking it out of the park,” says D’Onfrio. He excitedly continues, “This Netflix series that we’re filming right now, it’s going to be so amazing to watch. We’re doing these incredible, iconic scenes every single day. I have the best character; I play one of the best characters I’ve read in a long time. I haven’t had this much fun with a role for many years.

And what does he think of the role itself? Where is he finding the most inspiration for his version of Kingpin? “I knew a bit about Wilson Fisk. I had seen the movies. I saw other interpretations. But for this, they really wanted everything to be fresh,” he says. “They’re operating like they have been doing their movies. I’m finding most of my inspiration for Fisk coming from the old artwork, artists like Frank Miller,” the actor reveals.

When the interview for Men’s Journal coyly asks if we can expect a crossover between his Fisk and Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark- since the two are now friends, having worked on The Judge together as brothers- D’Onofrio drops this little nugget:

“It’s not impossible! They have all kinds of plans. I think this Daredevil show is going to be the start of some very exciting crossovers.”
