Virgin | Ramone Menon on Biblical Horror Story and Aramaic Language – Cinequest 2025

Jessica Damouni in Virgin

Ramone Menon noticed that some of the Biblical Christian stories can easily be interpreted with anguish, fear and horror. In his short film Virgin, he created a story about the birth of Jesus Christ in a horror setting that is a cross between The Passion of the Christ meets The Witch.

Since it’s set in Biblical times, Menon seeks authenticity with costumes and utilizes the dead Aramaic language in the film.

The film stars Jessica Damouni (Inspector Ike) as Miryam, Herman Gambhir (Sneaky Pete) as Yosef, and Katie Lynn Stoddard (Washerwoman) as The Beast.

Here is a brief description of the film:

LRM Online’s Gig Patta spoke with director and writer Ramone Menon about his love for the horror genre and his interpretation of religion. He greatly discussed Aramaic’s dead language by utilizing a linguistic college professor and training the actors in the dialect.

Ramon Menon made his directorial debut in 2014 with the crime horror film The Black Tape, about a home intruder trying to make a homemade murder film. He directed many short films, including Once Upon a Time in a Haunted House, The Pey, and My Scary Indian Wedding.

Virgin was showcased recently at the Cinequest 2025 in San Jose, Calif.
