Wait, So Is Neil Gaiman’s Sandman Series ACTUALLY Filming This Year?

Wow, what year is it? 2020? That means it’s been roughly one million years since Hollywood started trying to adapt Neil Gaiman’s comic book opus The Sandman. Seriously, ever since it started releasing the ‘90s, there’s always been some sort of adaptation in the works. In fact, Roger Avary of Pulp Fiction fame was once attached to it, along with Pirates of the Caribbean writers Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio — though this was before their big break.

More recently, in the mid-2010s, Joseph Gordon-Levitt was attached to the project, with David S. Goyer to produce, and a script by Jack Thorne and Eric Heisserer of Arrival fame. But, I think it goes without saying, that The Sandman was a property that wasn’t really suited to the big screen. In fact, the only reason Hollywood kept pushing for the big screen was because of the high-budget nature of the story. Now, things have changed, and TV and push out near feature-film quality products.

This made it that much more perfect that film had never really panned out. Then, in June of 2019, it was revealed that Netflix and Warner Bros. were set to develop a live-action Sandman series, with Allan Heinberg serving as showrunner. But will it actually happen?

That remains to be seen, but things are looking good. According to The GWW, the series is set to film this May in the United Kingdom. And, if you’re a fan of Gaiman’s involvement with his own shows, you’ll be happy to hear that he, along with Heinberg and David S. Goyer have their hands in the pilot’s script.

It all sounds great and ambitious to me, and the outlet goes on to state that this is going to be the most expensive DC Entertainment show to date and will consist of 11 episodes.

All I can say is how happy I am that the comic never got its Hollywood adaptation. As the television medium has matured, its shown just how well it can handle long-form and ambitious stories. Are you excited about The Sandman finally getting its adaptation? Sound off in the comments down below!
