The immediate future for Star Wars right now is on Disney+. However Star Wars will come back to movie theatres also. We have Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film coming eventually, but before that Patty Jenkins Rogue Squadron. Then, after Waititi’s Star Wars film we probably have the one being produced by Kevin Feige and written by Michael Waldron. However outside of the obvious focus of Rogue Squadron on a group of pilots, we really know nothing about any of these movies.
Now Taika Waititi has given an update on his Star Wars movie’s progress when speaking to Wired. The director also says he still wants to make a live-action Akira at some point in the future.
Having finished filming on Thor: Love and Thunder, Waititi is now focusing more on his Star Wars film. “It’s still in the ‘EXT. SPACE’ stage,” he laughs, referring to the format scriptwriters use to set up a scene. “But we’ve got a story. I’m really excited by it because it feels very me.” Has it been a challenge to marry his irreverent tone with the operatically sincere Star Wars universe? “I tend to go down that little sincerity alleyway in my films,” he says. “I like to fool the viewer into thinking ‘ha it’s this’ and then them going, ‘Damn it, you made me feel something!’”
But Star Wars is not the only project Waititi is committed to. At the time of writing, he is also tied to making a sequel to What We Do in the Shadows, an animated remake of Flash Gordon, two animated series of Roald Dahl stories for Netflix and of course that live-action adaptation of Akira, which has suffered a long and troubled development. “I’m still trying [to make it],” he says. “I don’t wanna give up on that.”

Yup, Waititi is a busy man and I doubt the director is making anymore than one Star Wars film. At least nothing like a trilogy, or series, as he has so many other projects on the go. I am especially looking forward to seeing what Waititi does with Flash Gordon. I like him as an actor, and a director, so I cannot wait to see what Waititi’s Star Wars film looks like. My guess is we should probably see that movie sometime around 2024, but I could be wrong.
What do you think of Taika Waititi’s comments? Sound off below as always.
