Look out, DC fans, because it looks like Transformers director Michael Bay is getting eyed to ruin your favorite chain-swinging, bike-riding mercenary. According to a report from TheWrap, he could be helming the project, which the studio hopes to be their answer to Deadpool.
So how far along are they? Bay reportedly read a draft of the script, then met with DC to give some notes for Wonder Woman writer Jason Fuchs to incorporate into his rewrite. Once that rewrite is done, they will show it to Bay in hopes of making a deal.
Lobo first made his appearance in The Omega Men #3, where he was a full-on villain. It wasn’t until the 1990s that his current reinterpretation was popularized. Initially, he was meant to be a parody of the hardened, gritty comics of the time, but that was something that apparently resonated with fans.
San Andreas and Rampage director Brad Peyton was last attached to the project, but it looks like that’s fallen through. The studio has been developing the project since 2009, but it seems as though something as potentially hard-R as Lobo couldn’t be done without Deadpool having paved the way first.
All in all, I can’t say I’m terribly optimistic, because if the talk about Lobo being their answer to Deadpool is true, it sounds like this is yet another instance of Warner Bros. being reactionary, which has never served them well.
