Wesley Snipes On His Scrapped ‘90s Black Panther Movie

It’s 2019, and we’ve already seen Black Panther appear across four films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including his own standalone flick that did worlds better than anyone actually expected it to do. So, it’s clear that there is a real demand for this character, but as we know, the idea of a black superhero on the big screen isn’t something that was always met with a thumbs up from Hollywood.

One of the first men to break down that barrier was Wesley Snipes with his portrayal of Blade. He also had a Black Panther project in the works way back in the ‘90s, and speaking with Kevin McCarthy, he opened up about that period.

“I had the rights to Black Panther maybe four or five years before the Blade project came around. When Blade came around, since we didn’t do Black Panther, our version of it, I thought, ‘Well, this would be a cool opportunity for me to do something for truly my friends. All the martial arts cats, all the cats that love Shaft, and all the cats that ever wanted to be a vampire and bite a chick on the neck.'”

“At that time, we didn’t actually have the technology, but we would have done all the Vibranium. All the x-ray vision and virtual operation and the whole nine of it. I wanted it to be like the comic book was [with a] super-city and super-science.”

Of course, if we did get Black Panther back then, it would have been a completely different deal. It would have had a much lower budget, and likely would have had to make a lot of compromises with the source material. All the same, it would have been interesting to see.
