Westworld Creators Lisa Joy And Jonathan Nolan’s New Futuristic Series Picked Up By Amazon

The creative gurus behind one of HBO’s critically-acclaimed dramas have landed their next project on the doorsteps of the Bezos Empire.

Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan’s next project, an adaptation of William Gibson’s futuristic novel The Peripheral, has been picked up for a straight to series order at Amazon Studios. The streaming giant, now the creative home for Joy and Nolan (who are husband and wife), has yet to release an episode count for the series.

Amazon Studios’ head of genre programming Sharon Tal Yguado was instrumental in bringing the duo to the company and in developing the series with them. Meanwhile, Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke had this to say regarding the series and its team:

“We’re thrilled to announceThe Peripheral as our first project with Jonah, Lisa, Athena and their talented team at Kilter Films. This story calls for a masterful level of talent to bring acclaimed author William Gibson’s science fiction thriller to life. We are excited to partner with Warner Bros. Television, Oscar-nominated writer Scott B. Smith and Vincenzo Natali in bringing this fantastic new series to our global Prime Video customers.”

In a joint statement, Nolan and Joy expressed their excitement over the project.

“Thirty-five years ago, William Gibson invented the future. With The Peripheralhe brings us another look, and his vision is as clear, intoxicating and terrifying as ever. All of us at Kilter are incredibly proud to be supporting Vincenzo and Scott’s brilliant vision for bringing Gibson’s work to the screen.”

In Gibson’s original work, The Peripheral takes place in a dark American future and focuses on the smart and ambitious Flynne Fisher, who attempts to keep her broken family together in a doomed location. Joy and Nolan will remain as show runners for Westworld while producing The Peripheral, as the two projects both originate from their previous Warner Bros. deal. According to some sources, when including their deal to remain on Westworld for another three seasons along with their new Amazon deal, the couple looks to rake in an estimated $200 million.

There is no word yet as to when production will begin on The PeripheralWestworld season 3 premieres on HBO sometime in 2020.
