What Does Avengers: Endgame’s Ending Mean For Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3? [SPOILERS]

James Gunn on Guardians 3

Disclaimer: This post contains major spoilers for Avengers: Endgame.

Unsurprisingly, while Avengers: Endgame does a fantastic job of playing out as the end of a 22-episode series, it also laid the groundwork for future “episodes” to come within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sure, this may be the end of the Infinity Saga, but Marvel Studios is smart enough to know that there are still billions of dollars on the table in this world — and we already know of plenty of other movies in the works for years to come, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

But what seeds did Avengers: Endgame plant for the James Gunn written and directed threequel? Well, for starters, we have ourselves a new Gamora. The one we saw die in Infinity War? Still dead. Killed in her father’s pursuit of the Soul Stone. Many of us were concerned this death would be reversed, and I’m happy that they kept it. Instead, we have a past Gamora, from around the time of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, which means there is still a lot of room for her to grow with her eventual family.

The end of Endgame sees the new Guardians of the Galaxy (with Nebula joining along) on their way to find her, and I’ll be interested to see how her relationship with them will play out. I’ll admit, Gamora has never interested me as a character, so this is a cool way for them to get a second chance to give her more dimension.

But, of course, the Guardians are not alone here. After going through an emotional breakdown in Endgame, Thor has abdicated the “throne” of New Asgard (giving Valkyrie all the power) and he decided to be who he is, not who he’s supposed to be. So, if we’re lucky, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could very well have Thor be a key player (he even jokes, calling them the Asgardians of the Galaxy) in the new film.

While Marvel Studios was happy to close the book on three key Avengers, it is clear that they are plenty happy to continue playing with Thor in the near future, and we couldn’t be happier.
