Welcome to another week of What This Fan Wants From… This week I am thinking about what I would see to see from the Disney+ shows Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki. So buckle up and see what you think of my fan expectations. This column is only intended as an opinion piece. I will point out any rumors or speculation as I go along, however, it is just my crazy ideas.
This week has seen some interesting news and rumors regarding both Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki. The upcoming Disney+ shows will be the first and third MCU TV shows released on the new streaming service, respectively. WandaVision will provide the sandwich filling between Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki. However, WandaVision seems so ‘out there’ at this point, I don’t even know what I want to see yet in that show. Like always, for me, a little bit of news usually gets me dreaming up ideas, and that’s certainly the case this week. I can’t cover both Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki in one article, so I’ll leave one of them for next week.
Why don’t see start off with,
Falcon and the Winter Soldier
There’s an aspect of Sam Wilson becoming the next Captain America that’s never sat right with me. My concern has always been the lack of any actual superpowers that Sam possesses. Captain America might not have been one of the most powerful Avengers (till he used Thor’s Hammer anyway), but he was a superhero. When Cap fights in that elevator scene from The Winter Soldier, you know it’s that extra strength and reaction speed that allows him to win. Can anyone see Sam Wilson defeating all those Hydra agents?
The problem as I always saw it, was the Super Soldier Serum. I couldn’t understand why Cap didn’t hand off some SSS along with his shield in Endgame‘s finale. I couldn’t understand from an MCU perspective, looking forward to the future of the character. However, as Phase 5 of the MCU progresses, I am starting to think they’d been one step ahead of me all the way.
Super Soldier Serum
I’m sure you know that Super Soldier Serum is the substance that turned Steve Rogers into Captain America. It was since lost, and the US theoretically could not replicate it. However, we know Russia or to be precise for the time period The Soviet Union got their hands on it. We know this because of the Winter Soldier and the fact that Red Guardian exists in the MCU. Red Guardian will be making his debut in Black Widow soon, he is essentially the Soviet version of Captain America.

Based on rumors, and putting some pieces together, I think the Super Soldier Serum (SSS) is about to become a major focus for the MCU. I’m guessing that for now, the two driving forces for the MCU are going to be the Super Soldier Serum, and the Multiverse. I think Black Widow is going to be closely aligned with the story of Falcon and the Winter Soldier. There’s a good chance that the story we see beginning in Black Widow (set in 2017-18) carries on. What if the next continuation of that plotline is Falcon and the Winter Soldier, set around 6 years in the future?
Rumor is that John Walker, otherwise known as U.S. Agent is given the SSS in Falcon and the Winter Soldier. What if other parties are trying to get their hands on it as well? This could definitely be another step towards a Thunderbolts show or movie down the line.
Sam’s Journey
I think what I want to see from Falcon and the Winter Soldier is an evolution of Sam from Falcon to Captain America. I want to see a Sam that’s doesn’t feel he deserves the role to begin with. To see Sam realize that he cannot trust anyone else to take on that role. We all might guess that U.S. Agent might end up a villain, I’d prefer an unwitting pawn in someone else’s game. Sam at one point will realize that Captain America will just become a brand without him. It’s not about the symbol, it’s about what you do with that power, and that symbol.
By the end of Falcon and the Winter Soldier, I want to see Sam embrace his destiny. For me, that means Sam taking the Super Soldier Serum and becoming a proper ‘super’ hero. A hero that can wield that shield and give leadership to the Avengers for many years to come.
Captain America and the White Wolf
For Bucky, he already has the benefits of being a Super Soldier, but his past still haunts him. Bucky has been fixed mentally in Wakanda, he can no longer be triggered in the same way he was before. Now it’s time for Bucky Barnes to be what he always should have been, the colleague of Captain America.
I want to see Bucky not only becoming Sam’s friend, but seeing him as Captain America. Bucky saw Steve as just Steve until he was shown what Captain America truly could be. That’s the journey I want to see Bucky take. By the end of Falcon and the Winter Soldier I want it to feel like Captain America and the White Wolf should be the title. Falcon and the Winter Soldier won’t exist anymore, that’s what this show should be about.
As for the villains, I think there’s a chance Sam’s not the only character taking SSS. I personally think it would also be a great arc for Zemo to actually develop the super-human abilities he hates so much. Both Zemo, and John Walker would make great additions to a future Thunderbolts movie. We know that General Ross appears in Black Widow, I’ll guess he will show up in Falcon and the Winter Soldier too.
Wrap it up, Fanboy
This plot arc, which could begin in Black Widow and carry through to Falcon and the Winter Soldier really excites me. I think where it is leading to is a big Avengers v Thunderbolts movie. But, it’s not the only story arc being pushed in Phase 5. Next week’s column is going to deal with the other side of Phase 5 as I see it, the Multiverse.
So stick with me, and keep an eye out for What This Fan Wants From…Loki, appearing next week.
What do you think of my Super Soldier Serum theory? Do you agree with me that Falcon and the Winter Soldier will be a sequel of sorts to Black Widow? Critique my ideas or give us some better ones from your own fan brain in the usual spot below.
