What would Joe Russo do with Wolverine? The co-director of Avengers: Endgame certainly knows how to make a Marvel movie. Though, at the time, Wolverine was a character Russo was not allowed to use. Now that the Disney purchase of Fox is complete, there is nothing stopping Marvel from recasting Wolverine. On that front, Joe Russo has some advice for Marvel. He also says he’d love to take a shot at the character sometime further down the line.
Russo recently appeared on the Lights, Camera, Barstool podcast. Here is what he said about Wolverine.
“To realize him on screen, it’s very hard because Hugh Jackman’s performance is definitive. It’s like Batman; you have to really think of a way to, you have to really find the right actor to come in and give a really different take to that character. But I would really love to see him on screen. I think the best thing is to take a break, without question,” he added. “You need a [palate cleanser], you need to rinse the towel a little bit, let everyone enjoy what was, and then come up with something new. But I’d love to take a crack at Wolverine at some point.”
I think I speak for most MCU fans when I say I’d love to see what Joe Russo would do with Wolverine. I don’t know when Wolverine will show up in the MCU, but he will show up. Who will play the popular character, how will Marvel differentiate him from Hugh Jackman’s version? All that remains to be seen.
I fully expect that at some point in the future the Russos will sign up to make Secret Wars for Marvel, though that may be a while away yet. Perhaps by that time Wolverine will have made his MCU debut and Joe Russo will get his wish? Until we hear some definitive plans though, there are probably only a handful of folks that know when Wolverine returns. Joe Russo himself might not be one of them considering his current absence from a Marvel project.
