Wheel of Time star talks sets and accents.

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to disappear into some fantasy worlds. While His Dark Materials and The Witcher were great warm-ups, we know the real age of fantasy on TV is just starting. We got big titans on the way in the form of The Lord of the Rings and, of course, The Wheel of Time. Based on the novel series by Robert Jordan, this Amazon Prime show is set to be the next big world for viewers to explore.

As such, it makes sense the show would boast amazing sets. One of The Wheel of Time’s stars, Jennifer Cheon Garcia, recently spoke with Talk’aran’rhiod: The Wheel of Time Showcast. In their discussions, things inevitably led to the immersive sets she experienced during the production.

“It’s breathtaking,” Garcia said on the pod. “You walk on set and you look at these full-on cities that they build, and you walk in there, and it takes hold of you. You think how easy it is going to feel to drop into this place and drop into these characters because you’re in these incredible costumes and there’s little details to everything, which brings you into that world and into that space. You can really live it and the camera catches it all. It was unlike any production I’ve ever walked onto. Every little detail, from the carvings on the floor to the detail of the little writings on the chair, I mean, my gosh. I can’t wait for you guys to see it.”

And speaking of world immersion, one thing one has to wonder is how they’ll handle accents. It’s always a weird, double-edged sword with fantasy. Many of us Americans assume that most medieval-inspired fantasy worlds come coupled with British accents. But is that the approach they’re taking for this show? Well, yes and no. 

Garcia’s character, Leane Sharif, will apparently sport “more of a UK accent.” Garcia went on to say that “we all kind of have a bit of an accent.” She also states showrunner Rafe Judkins encouraged them to use their own accents when possible. Presumably, this is when it fits or when the accent is inconsequential. 

But we’ll honestly have to wait and see on that front. There are so many characters and nuances that hearing the perspective of a single actor would only lead to disappointment.
