Where Are The 36 Other Kids? What This Fan Wants From… The Umbrella Academy Season 2

The Umbrella Academy Season 2 hits Netflix on July 31st. So what better time to get into what this season 1 fan wants to see from Season 2? At the end of Season 1, the team failed to stop Vanya from destroying the Moon. However, Five used his powers to transport the whole team back in time. Thus, hopefully allowing them to have more time to prevent the end of the world.

Season 2 will deal with the Hargreeves back in the 60’s. However, things have actually taken a turn for the worse. Not only is the Commission still trying to kill them all, but now the apocalypse is coming quicker, about 50 years quicker. Five has seen a Nuclear holocaust coming and for some reason it is tied to both the gang, and the assassination of President Kennedy. You can catch the trailer for Season 2 below, which was just released earlier this week.

As per usual with this column, this is not about me predicting what will happen in Season 2. Instead I am taking a look at some of the hanging story questions that I’d like to see answered. I accept that there is no reason to answer all these questions in Season 2, hopefully the show will go on for many more seasons. However, here is where my fan brain is going when it comes to The Umbrella Academy.

The Other 36 Children

The premise of The Umbrella Academy is that on October 1, 1989, 43 women around the world give birth simultaneously. However none of them showed any signs of pregnancy prior to that night. Sir Reginald Hargreeves adopted seven of these children, somehow knowing they would be special. Those seven kids grew into ‘The Umbrella Academy’, but what happened to the other 36 children? Surely it makes logical sense that they all received some sort of superpowers also? That fact is sticking in the back of my head as a sure to come plot point for the future. Though, I can’t say I expect this to be covered much in Season 2.

Season seems fully set within the ’60’s. That means there would be no opportunity for any of those other kids to show up, none of them were born until 1989. However, we also know the Commission is back with a vengeance, so would they have potentially recruited some of these other kids to their cause? The three Swedish assassins that are sent to kill presumably Five and the others, could potentially be other special kids recruited by the Commission. Maybe that’s not the case, but I would be suitably intrigued if they have any powers. We also know from the trailer above that the team go and visit a younger Reginald Hargreeves. Is this going to be a paradox moment? Is Hargreeves only aware of special nature of these kids because he was visited by his future children in the past?

Will we find out any more about why this mass birth event happened? Was there a higher purpose at work? Considering one of those children (Vanya) ends up destroying the world despite the efforts of her siblings to stop her, it seems unlikely. I’ll guess the origin of the 43 will remain a mystery, however I don’t want the fates of those other kids to remain a mystery.

The Commission

The Umbrella Academy Season 2

We know that an organisation of humans, with the ability to travel throughout time has been established post-apocalypse. This organisation seems intent on preserving only one part of the timeline, the actual apocalypse itself. The Commission seems happy to mess with the timeline as long as the apocalyptic event occurs. However, will they be as keen to see this event take place 50+ years earlier than it was supposed to?

This is just a guess, but I wonder if the Commission and their whole society would never happen if not for that apocalyptic event? Are the Commission trying to preserve the timeline so that their own future isn’t erased. If the Apocalypse is stopped, would the Commission simply wink out of existence? What kind of ripple effects would that have on the timeline. I’m saying I want to get more information about the bad guys this time around. I may understand the goals of the Commission a little, but I want to know more. Exploring what kind of reality the Commission is so scared of would be fun. How did Commission discovered the ability to time travel? What is the extent of what the Commission have done to ensure their own future?

The Commission, and specifically their agents Cha Cha and Hazel were great in Season 1, but I need more going forward. I don’t like my villains to be completely in the background, I want to explore their point of view. And who the hell is that dude in the Season 2 trailer that has a goldfish bowl for a head? It seems like he, she, it is the leader of the Commission, that’s a question I want answered for a start. Apparently, his name is Carmichael and appears in the graphic novels, but I avoided any more details for fear of spoilers.  I also wonder whether the answer to my first question above about the 36 children is connected with how this Commission came about in the first place? Intriguing.

Hargreeves

I want to know a hell of a lot more about Sir Reginald Hargreeves. Season 1 obviously starts with the death of Hargreeves, so we only really see him in flashbacks and those are always from the kids point of view. I also want to know why he spells his name Hargreeves instead of Hargreaves like everyone else. Though perhaps that’s a question for the creators of the graphic novel? All joking aside, I am intrigued to find out more about what makes Hargreeves tick. The fact that the team in the ’60’s can speak with Hargreeves directly, and we can see a younger version excites me. Hargreeves is clearly a man of genius level intellect, questionable moral standards, and perhaps some delusions of grandeur. Sounds like an interesting character to me.

Hargreeves obviously has plenty of money, but what was he like before that day in 1989? We know Hargreeves created Pogo by injecting a standard Chimpanzee with a ‘serum’. Did Hargreeves create this serum able to give Chimps sentience? How does Hargreeves seem to know so much? If he always had these plans and knew he had to raise special children, why was he such a poor father? Did Hargreeves know the end of the world was coming, or did he simply anticipate these children as special and gathered them up as a curiosity? Finally, is Hargreeves aware of the Commision, and does he know what became of the other children?

A lot of questions and I certainly don’t need to have all of these answered. I definitely don’t need them answered in Season 2 either. However, as a fan, these are some of the mysteries I myself want to know more about. I’d like to find out more about Hargreeves, and his true goals and plans. Not from the POV of the kids, but how Hargreeves appears to us the audience without any bias. Perhaps how the kids see Hargreeves is all there is to see, but I am expecting something slightly different when the ‘Umbrella’ kids meet their father in the 1960’s.

Wrap It Up Fanboy

Ultimately, I don’t know enough about the graphic novel to get too specific here. These are just the burning questions that hooked me in wnating to find an answer. I would be disappointed if none of this gets explored further. Then again, as I said up top, I don’t necessarily need answers for all this in The Umbrella Academy Season 2. I’d be happy enough to learn a little more information.

I’m not sure how many seasons The Umbrella Academy will run for. I do know I am excited to see what Season 2, and not too long to wait now.

What do you hope to see in The Umbrella Academy Season 2? Do you not care about any of the questions I ahve and would like answered? Is there anything you agree with me on? Leave your thoughts below as always.
