Brandon Sanderson Has No Fears About Stormlight Archive 4: Rhythm Of War Living Up To Hype

Is Brandon Sanderson concerned about Rhythm of War?

Rhythm of War is set to hit this November. It’s been less than three years since we’ve been treated to a Stormlight Archive book, but you can bet anticipation is high. That was three years fans have been able to pore over every detail over the last thousand-page novels. Three years fans have been able to construct theories and build up tons of headcanon with which to compare the next entry in the Stormlight Archive series.

So, with all that in mind, you can imagine there would be a lot of pressure, right? Whenever continuing a story, there has to be an amount of anxiety and uncertainty. That just seems to be the natural way of things. During a recent livestream, author Brandon Sanderson was asked about that very thing. Did he have any concern about Rhythm of War not living up to the hype?

“Nope,” Sanderson said. “Not with Rhythm of War because — particularly with Stormlight books — I have exhaustive beta reading process. I know, in general, how people are going to respond to the book. And things I worry about are generally things that are more experimental. Like the third Stephen Leeds story (the Legion series), right? Which was pretty thematically different from a lot of other stuff I’ve written. That one I wondered about. “Worry” is the wrong term, though. My worry isn’t that people respond poorly to my work, it’s that that I will not be able to properly express what I want…”

Sanderson continued: “What I worry about is that I will try something and that it will be misinterpreted. Or that I won’t have the skill to achieve what I want to achieve. That, hopefully, we are able to iron out through beta reads…I am pretty tired of [working on] Rhythm of War, but I am also pretty confident you guys are going to enjoy the book.”

So, if you’re a fan, Sanderson does seem to think you’ll likely enjoy what you read. And this is how he feels at the very tail-end of the process. As of this writing, we are but a few days away from Sanderson finishing the novel.

“I will finish Stormlight 4 — this week is the goal,” he said. “At the very latest, over the weekend. The last draft, sending it on to production.”
