Ready Player One Sequel, Ready Player Two, To Hit This November — Cover Revealed

It’s been nearly a decade since Ready Player One hit bookstores back in 2011. In that time, the book managed to explode and bring in readers and gamers alike. It was a novel that celebrated fan culture like no other mainstream book before it. And, in many ways, it is, it is also a great entry into the world of LitRPG novels, which tend to feature characters hopping into a game world. And, of course, we can’t mention Ready Player One without bringing up the Steven Spielberg film.

While it didn’t quite capture the essence of the novel, it was a fun and unique take on the story. Also co-written by the book’s author Ernest Cline, the movie felt like more of an opportunity to do a second draft of a story concept. It was close enough to be recognizable, but had enough changes made that it felt like its own thing. But for those wondering when we’d be able to revisit that world in novel form, you need not wait long.

Ready Player One will be hopping back into the Oasis in a brand-new sequel novel. Quite appropriately, the book will be called Ready Player Two.

Of course, as with any sequel, there is a lot of pressure going into this one. Ready Player One was a massive hit, and it did a good job of telling a totally complete story. Cline will need to go a long way in order to justify the existence of Ready Player Two. Also, in the time since Ready Player One hit, there has been a resurgence of ‘80s culture in our media. With series like Stranger Things and movies like IT really doubling down on that, audiences may be ready to move on to a different decade. Will Ready Player Two actually be able to evolve from the concept of the original novel and not just ape it?

It’s hard to say. As of this writing, we have no idea what the synopsis is for this sequel. As such, we can’t quite speculate how Cline plans on revisiting the Oasis. That being said, I do think the original novel held up well enough outside of the pop culture it embraced. It was fun, had great stakes, and got me engaged in the world it created. So long as Cline can do that, I really won’t care much about those surface-level details.
