Why Colin Trevorrow Turned Down Directing Guardians Of The Galaxy

Most times, you can feel the love a director has for a franchise through the film itself. Such is the case with James Gunn and Guardians of the Galaxy. Before Gunn landed the job, was fired from the job, and ultimately rehired, Marvel talked with another director who is more and more becoming a household name, at least to us nerds, Colin Trevorrow.

Yes, the man who was once set to bring us the final chapter in the Skywalker Saga, met with Marvel to potentially bring us the Guardians, but felt he didn’t have the personal connection to the franchise needed to properly bring it to the screen. Trevorrow recently spoke with Empire and you can check out what he had to say below.

“I did. I met on Guardians of the Galaxy long, long ago. Yeah, very early. It was a great conversation. I was not a comic book kid. That wasn’t my thing. I was a Star Wars kid, an Indiana Jones kid, a Spielberg kid – that was my thing. So it was a great conversation, but a little bit more of a personal understanding of, you need someone who loved this growing up. [They] should be the ones directing these movies. You’ve gotta live and breathe it in the way that I did Jurassic and these films that I get to be involved in now.”

I grew up much the same to Trevorrow, I wasn’t really exposed to comic books, though had I been, I think I would have enjoyed them. I do think that most of the time, having the writer and/or director love the property can be a big help in it’s development, especially in cases where the franchise is an obscure one to the majority of the moviegoing public.

As we all know Trevorrow went on to bring us a continuation of the Jurassic Park franchise, one he grew up having a healthy love for, however, he hasn’t received the overwhelming approval in the way that Gunn has with Guardians, along with loving a franchise, there are many other factors involved with making films.

Do you think Trevorrow could have delivered on Guardians as well or better than James Gunn? Let us know in the comments down below!
