Why Creator Eric Kripke Left Supernatural After Season 5

I would say it’s a safe bet that at this very moment, somewhere in the Supernatural universe Sam and Dean Winchester are in some small town. Dean is gassing up Baby, for what might be the last time. And Sam is walking out of the store with some sort of health-conscious snack for himself and a big fat slice of pie for Dean.

The wayward sons’ long strange trip is winding down. Their journey began back in 2005 and seemed simple enough. Though it quickly spiraled out of control and to Biblical proportions. Series creator Eric Kripke originally intended the show to end after five seasons. However, the series was simply too popular and now will finally come to a conclusion in its fifteenth season.

Kripke recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the reason he decided to leave the show, you can check it out below.

We were reaching the end of this five-year storyline [so] I thought the timing was right,” he explained. “I knew that we were closing this chapter and opening a new one. It felt like it was the right time to take a step back and focus on new projects, but still keep my grubby little mitts in the show.”

Kripke stayed on as a writer and producer in Season 6. Though he doesn’t seem bitter and his posts and comments imply he still takes in a viewing from time-to-time. Some fans of the show that only consider seasons 1-5 to be canon. I understand why as it was probably when the show was at its best. However, had the show ended with Season 5 we would have never been able to enjoy the fantastic meta episodes such as ‘The French Mistake,’ and ‘Fan Fiction,’ among a handful of others.

How the story will end for the Winchester brothers is any fan’s guess. Killing them off would seem anti-climatic, though it would put a stamp that the series is over. There’s a strong possibility that the ending is going to be loved by some fans and hated by others. That’s true for most shows, however, considering the 15 year run of Supernatural, ending this story is going to especially difficult.
