“X is going to be the new Game of Thrones!”

It’s a nice buzzword that people like us like to use in headlines all the time (for an example, see the headline “Why Halo Won’t Be Showtime’s Game Of Thrones, According To Showtime Bosses), but that doesn’t necessarily make something true, now does it? Given how successful Game of Thrones has been for HBO, it’s fun to anticipate the next show that will reach that level of success, which is unfair.

It’s with this in mind that the comments from Showtime president of programming Gary Levine and CEO David Nevins’ comments regarding the situation are understandable. When asked at the TV Critics Association press tour about this, they downplayed the comment.

“This will be our Halo,” Levine said. He could have dropped the mic with that comment, as given the source material’s popularity, it needs no comparisons to Game of Thrones, but Nevins had a lot more to say.

“I’ve seen scripts. I think it’s a very different genre. It is futuristic space based science fiction. It’s not fantasy. There’s been one iconic franchise in my opinion in the history of television in that category and that’s Star Trek. Probably 10 or 12 of the top 20 movies of all time are futuristic sci-fi. It’s weird that television hasn’t turned up those kinds of franchises. It was a long time to get the script where we felt we had something really interesting and felt like it belonged on Showtime in terms of its character depth. It’s going to be a big show.”

In terms of getting a point across in few words, it’s easy to fall on lazy shorthands like “the next Game of Thrones,” but it shouldn’t be forgotten that each show stands on its own merits. But will Halo managed to stand on its own…We’ll have to wait and see!
