Why Kylo Ren’s Lightsaber Looks Like An Unstable Monstrosity

In a recent interview director Shawn Levy talks about his new Star Wars movie in development, but refuses to comment on Adam Driver links.

The lightsaber of Kylo Ren. The weapon has been the subject of much debate. While it has a cool, medieval look to it, criticisms such as the hilt possibly hurting the person wielding the blade have been brought to attention.

The Star Wars comic book The Rise of Kylo Ren revealed how this unique lightsaber came to be. The lightsaber is the same one that Ben Solo had when he was a Jedi. The blade was originally blue but after his fall, he attempted a process in which all Siths engage. Ben made his blade bleed. And while he was successful, the blade ruptured and would no longer operate normally.

With a high output of uncontrolled energy coming from the blade, the crossguard was born. This allowed the energy to have a safe(r) outlet. This is also what led to it’s awesome and highly unstable appearance.

I believe I had always heard that, at least in the old Expanded Universe, the Sith made used synthetic crystals to make their lightsabers. Though I have to say I think them making them bleed their crystals to turn red is really cool, and I like this much way better.
