Why Margot Robbie Chose Birds Of Prey Over Gotham City Sirens

For a while there, there were a few different Harley Quinn-centric titles in the works over at Warner Bros. We had Gotham City Sirens, Birds of Prey, and even a Harley and Joker movie. It may have seemed as though all three of them were going to get made into a series of films, but as it stands now, Birds of Prey is where the studio decided to focus their attention going forward.

But why Birds of Prey? Sure, the characters are well-known in comic circles, but the ladies of Gotham City Sirens were certainly more well-known by mainstream audiences.

“Whilst I was researching the character I started to read Birds of Prey and first I fell in love with Huntress, and I started looking into all of that,” Birds of Prey producer and star Margot Robbie told Nerdist. “I was like, ‘Wow, there’s so many cool female DC characters and no one knows anything about any of them!’ So what if we had a platform for fans to get to know and fall in love with some of these other amazing women? Focusing on the Gotham City Sirens, there were only three of us and we were all well known, whereas with Birds of Prey you can pick any grouping for that, and I thought that might be the perfect platform to introduce some female characters who might really have some legs in the DC Universe.”

And I have to say, I can see where she’s coming from. Oftentimes in film, us fans lament the lack of originality with the projects out there, and yet when more obscure characters are getting the limelight, we point fingers and ask who was asking for specific characters to get movies. All in all, I think this is probably good news for creatives and good news for fans who will get projects they’re less familiar with.
