One question on some fans minds with regards to the MCU is, will SHIELD or Hydra return? The two sides of that coin were explored thoroughly within the early stages of the MCU. However Hydra kinda ended in Age of Ultron and SHIELD was pretty much killed off by Hydra in Winter Soldier. Fans of Agents of SHIELD will point to how both SHIELD and Hydra were explored further. However, it’s harder and harder these days to connect AoS into the larger MCU.
Recently WandaVision introduced us to a new organization taken straight from the comics in SWORD. It kinda feels like SWORD may take on a lot of the role SHIELD used to play. As for who can take on the Hydra role, well, there are many comic based possibilities. But what about SHIELD and Hydra, are they gone for good. Kevin Feige was asked the question in the recent press event for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier that LRM attended. Here is what he said.
“Well, again, you can always look at the comics, right? We always take our lead from what has happened before, and those organizations come and go in various forms over the years,” he teased. “So, they always could [return]. There are new organizations like SWORD, that you saw in WandaVision, so there’s always an inherent need for above-board or shadowy organizations of some kind in the MCU.”

It’s always going to depend on the stories of the MCU and who is writing them. Perhaps Feige will be pitched an idea that brings Hydra or SHIELD back from the grave that he loves. Then, they’ll be back. I think Feige is basically telling us that nothing is ever off the table. Equally, I’ll also guess there are no immediate plans to heavily lean back towards these old rivals. However, Feige could always be playing coy? Let’s face it, no one expects Feige to be like, ‘Yeah, you’ll actually see both of those back big time within Ms. Marvel, oops, spoiler guys.’ Feige is a master now at this media business, and he says what he wants to say and refuses to answer when the question can’t be adequately answered without giving too much away.
Ultimately though, as for whether SHIELD or Hydra return, I think you’d be mad to bet against it. There is a lot of room for their return within the MCU, but maybe not yet?
