Which is better and which should carry forward, the John Williams or Hanz Zimmer Superman Theme? As fans likely already know, Henry Cavill is back as Superman in the post-credit scene of Black Adam. In that scene the classic John Williams Superman theme is used and it begs the question, which should they use going forward?
I’ll admit, when I heard Man of Steel was not using the Williams theme I was baffled. To me, that’s like an Indiana Jones film without the Williams theme, unthinkable. However, I then watched Man of Steel and I admit I thought Zimmer’s Superman them was great as well. That left me in a pickle, I know which one I like better overall, but I can’t say I dislike one in any way either.
Perhaps, the change Superman will go through now in the DCU will make the Williams theme return feel more fitting? However for Cavill himself, he’s not playing favorites with this one. Speaking with CineamBlend recently Cavill gave praise for both Williams and Zimmer’s themes.
“John Williams’ theme song is obviously incredibly important to the character. It’s something which resonates with the character and everything time I think anyone in the world hears that, I think a large portion of the world who hears that will recognize it immediately as Superman and feel a certain way about it, and I do think it’s wonderful.”
“But at the same time, equally so, I think Hans Zimmer’s Man of Steel score was just as wonderful. I have incredibly powerful feelings about that because I remember watching the trailer, the first teasers come out, and I was sitting there with my friend and we were both so excited about it and the way the score plays. Both are incredibly powerful in their own way and both are just as iconic for the character. It was just such a pleasure to be back in the suit, whether it be John Williams or whether it be Hans Zimmer, they’re both extraordinary, extraordinary artists.”

Is there a way to continue to use both? Superman is Superman, I guess he can have two themes if needed. Or should one of these be dropped and the other be kept for superman as he goes forward in the newly renamed DCU? I’m not sure I have an answer, I can really see both sides of the argument. If If I were making the next Superman movie, i.e. Man of Steel 2, I would likely choose to use both if allowed, but for different character moments within the story. I guess that’s now a decision that the director of Man of Steel 2 will make, and discuss with Gunn and Safran, who are now running the DCU.
