The Willow sequel gets an update.
Remember way back when live-action fantasy stories on the big screen weren’t too common? They weren’t respected, and the limited budget really added to a limit of vision. It was no surprise how few we got — and those few we got were…challenging, in most cases. So, the fact that Willow came out and was actually good was pretty awesome. It was one of those keystone fantasy films for me, and while I haven’t revisited it in decades, it still has a warm place in my heart.
We have known for some time that there is a new Disney+ series in the works from Ron Howard. However, every so often, it’s good to check in and see how things were going. Last we heard, the project was underway, but had not been given the greenlight yet. So, has there been any update on that front? Well, yes and no.
“I was in a two-hour story meeting last night,” Howard said to Andy Cohen. “The writer Jon Kasdan is leading the charge. They have a great group of writers, and it’s in very active development. And the scripts are going great. They have to get through the season and budget. There’s no greenlight there yet, but I’m very optimistic about it. I love [Kasdan’s] take on it.”
So, as it stands, there is no green light, but active development isn’t a bad place to be. They have a team of writers and seem to be chipping away at all the important preliminary stuff. Disney+ is hard-up for content, so I have no doubt that this will work out down the line. It’s just a matter of them making sure it works out sooner rather than later.
